About Scan Cleanup
A photograph of a page is a page seen from an angle, lit by whatever was in the room. Three corrections put that right: the page is found and squared up, the lighting is divided back out, and the contrast is set. The corners are detected for you and can be dragged if the detection was wrong.
Taking the lighting out is the step that makes the difference. A heavy blur of a page is the light that fell on it - the writing is far too fine to survive a blur that wide - so dividing the page by that leaves the ink and takes the room with it. That is what turns grey paper white without turning the text grey too.
It is arithmetic on the pixels, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is invented: text that was too blurred to read in the photograph is still too blurred to read afterwards.

- Is Scan Cleanup really free?
- Yes. Scan Cleanup is free to use with no account, no daily task limit and no paid tier holding features back. Your result is never watermarked and never held behind an email address. The only real limit is your own device, since the file has to fit in your browser's memory while it is being worked on.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- Everything runs inside your browser tab. The file is read with the browser File API, processed in a Web Worker on your machine, and handed back to you as a download. It is never sent to a server.
- It cropped the wrong thing. Can I fix it?
- Yes. The four corners are handles - drag any of them onto the corners of the page. If no page was found at all, the whole photo is kept and you can place the corners yourself.
- Can I save it as a PDF?
- Yes, as a PDF at the size of the cleaned page, or as a JPG, PNG or WebP image. Use Images to PDF if you have several pages to put in one document.
- Does this make the text searchable?
- No - it produces a picture of a clean page, not text. Run Make Searchable on the PDF afterwards if you need to select or search the words.
