About Remove metadata
Remove metadata takes out what a photo carries besides the picture — where it was taken, the camera, the date, the software and any caption — and saves the same picture without it.
A photo from a phone records the exact place it was taken, to a few meters, along with the phone’s make and model and the second the shutter went. Most social sites strip it when you post; a photo sent as a file, attached to an email or uploaded to a form usually keeps it.
JPG, PNG and WebP are copied block by block, and the blocks that hold metadata are left behind. Nothing is decoded or compressed again, so the pixels are exactly the ones you started with and the file only gets smaller. Two things stay on purpose: the color profile, which changes how the colors look and says nothing about you, and the turn a camera records when the phone was held sideways — kept on its own, so the picture is not saved on its side.
AVIF keeps its metadata in a structure this does not rewrite, so an AVIF is drawn and saved again instead, which clears everything and re-encodes the picture. The result lists what was found and removed.
