About Remove background
Remove background cuts the subject out of a photo while you watch, so the boundary, the background behind it and the crop are all settled before you save it.
Two different problems wear the same name. A product shot against a plain white sweep is a matter of finding the color and flooding it out, which is fast and exact. A person in a room is not: there is no single background color, and the boundary runs through hair. So this tool looks at the picture first and takes the cheap route when the cheap route is right, and runs a subject-detection model on your device when it is not.
Neither is ever perfect on the first pass, which is why the cut is drawn live rather than handed over as a finished file. You paint back what was cut away and cut away what was kept, at whatever brush size the edge needs, and set the background, the shadows and the crop beside it. Tolerance decides how far the flood spreads on a plain ground — wider when the background is slightly uneven, tighter when the subject is close to it in color. Change it and the cut is worked out again in front of you.
The result is a PNG with real transparency. JPG cannot hold transparency at all, so saving a cutout as a JPG puts the white back.
