About Page numbers

Page numbers prints numbers onto the pages of a PDF in one of five formats, including Bates numbering for legal work, starting at whichever page you choose.

Five formats cover almost everything a numbered document needs: a bare figure, "Page 1", "1 / 12", "Page 1 of 12", and a Bates number for legal work. Position, margin, size, weight and opacity place it, and the pages before Start on page are left bare — which is how a cover and a contents page stay unnumbered while the body starts at one.

Bates numbering is the one worth explaining. It is a fixed-width sequence with a prefix — ABC000001, ABC000002 — stamped once per page so that every page in a production has a unique identifier that can be cited in a filing. Prefix and digit count are both yours to set.

Numbers are drawn into the page, not added as a header the reader could switch off. If the document already carries numbers printed into its pages, these are added beside them rather than replacing them; pick a position and a margin that keeps the two apart.
