How to cut a product photo out of its background

A cut-out sits on any background: a marketplace listing, a slide, a printed sheet. The work is one pass in the browser, and the photo never leaves the device it is on.

Start with a usable photo

Even light and a clear gap between the object and what is behind it do most of the job. Glass, wire and loose hair are the hard cases, and they are where the tolerance setting earns its place.

The three steps

1Open the tool and pick the photoDrag it onto the page or paste it from the clipboard. Nothing uploads; the file is read in the tab.
2Check the edgeHold Compare to see the photo as it came in. Raise the tolerance when bits of the background stay behind, and lower it when the edge of the object starts to disappear — the cut is worked out again each time you change it.
3Export as PNG or WebPBoth keep transparency. WebP files are smaller, PNG is accepted everywhere.

Then what

Most people follow this with Optimize image before a listing, or Images to PDF when the cut-outs go into a printed sheet. Both are in the same tab, and neither asks for an account.
